Bravo Britten
Higgledy, piggledy,
Dodecacophony
claimed to amalgamate
all keys at once.
Back in the seventies
anyone wanting to
write in C major was
clearly a dunce.

sit-ups
My neighbour’s olderish,
ignores any nursing help,
aid to peeing’s balderdash,
groans his own hoist,
pain’s a chore, and queer;
I explore swivelling, yelp–
he’s had two, this my first,
I’m the second oldest here.
My neighbor moans, stays flat.
I hobble to wifi, phone,
when moving home to heal
refuse to over-feel
his elder-geezer hurt:
“You’re leaving me alone.”
country club
This stately edifice is no hovel,
Augustan lintel, greensward, towering cedars,
fit setting for an Austen novel,
capacious ball-rooms where knowing readers
watch Mrs. Bennett auctioning daughters,
trilling on marriage, superior wealth.
Men indifferent to dancing matters
shuffle these halls for recovering health,
discomfited men in pajamas and track suits
forming a club, a round table for meals,
not desperately ill but aware of decline;
(the young ones cradle their private parts).
Every one knows how the other guy feels–
a scarred, hospitable circle of sorts.
root causes
Mario, genial lad from Sarnia
calls me old-timer—
lawn-mowing popped his hernia,
sneezing’s a slammer.
Tim, talkative bartender
hoicked with straight legs,
bent his belly-fender
heaving kegs.
Eugene’s zealous golf swing
jumped out of his shoes;
viscera’s double hornet-sting
bogies the blues.
Hoariest of the stricken kids
septuagenarian mugger
raising grand piano lids,
Boesendorfer- bugger.
the doc
You’d expect a Shouldice surgeon
to have undergone spartan training
like filleting a sturgeon
or threading a canvas awning
without straining.
But my doctor’s a piano jock
who’s mastered his ARCT*
both mano a mano with Bartok
and octave dexterity,
Lisztian filigree.
Bravura, the kindest cut,
lies keen within his hands,
he knows my playing, feels my gut;
sudden peculiar friends–
with blue bull’s eye he marks the spot
where pain ends.
